Kashyap’s Arrest Sheds Light on Online Misinformation and Its Consequences.
PATNA: The recent arrest of YouTuber Manish Kashyap, also known as Tripurari Tiwari, has sparked a social media storm, with people expressing their support and criticism for him. Kashyap had surrendered at Jagdishpur police in Bihar after being accused by both Bihar and Tamil Nadu police of posting fake videos and photographs related to attacks on Bihari migrant workers in Tamil Nadu.
After news of his arrest broke, Kashyap’s Twitter account was flooded with comments from supporters and critics. BJP leader Kapil Mishra extended his support to Kashyap, comparing the Bihar government’s actions to “emergency, dictatorship and repression” and accusing them of being scared and weak. Others on social media expressed concerns about the treatment Kashyap was receiving and questioned the use of his Tiwari surname.
Kashyap has been accused of creating an atmosphere of fear and malice among people, and an arrest warrant was issued against him two days before his surrender. The Economic Offences Unit (EOU) of Bihar police has registered three cases against him and has formed special teams to attach his properties. The Tamil Nadu police, which has also lodged 10 cases against Kashyap, will also interrogate him.
Police froze four of Kashyap’s bank accounts with deposits of a total of Rs 42,11,937 lakh after his arrest. The EOU has also found evidence of financial irregularities against him and plans to interrogate him further in Patna.
Kashyap had contested the 2020 elections as an independent candidate from Chanpatia. The social media storm surrounding his arrest highlights the power of social media in shaping public opinion and the impact it can have on legal proceedings.
