New Delhi: Opposition parties protested in front of Mahatma Gandhi statue in the Parliament premises over the issue of GST and inflation on food items.
Many leaders of the opposition, including Rahul Gandhi, took part in protest.
Earlier on Tuesday, the opposition had protested inside the house, after which the proceedings of the house had to be adjourned.
The opposition says that the new GST rates have worked to increase inflation further.
The GST Council, chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, had decided to levy 5% GST on products like packaged curd, paneer, lassi, honey, dry makhana, dry soybean, peas, puffed rice. However, GST exemption will continue on unbranded products sold in the open.
Raising slogans against the government, the Congress members demanded a rollback in the prices of LPG.
They also held banners and placards which read that “high inflation, continuous price rise badly affecting common people”.
Congress MPs from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha participated in the protest. They included the leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and the Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
On the imposition of GST, Finance Minister Sitharaman says that this decision has not been taken by any one member but by the entire GST Council.
