Katihar: In a tragic turn of events, one person has lost their life and two others are injured as a result of police firing during a protest in Katihar district, Bihar. The incident occurred at the Barsoi block office premises on Wednesday, where a large gathering of villagers and representatives had assembled to protest against the irregular power supply system in the district.
The situation escalated suddenly as the protestors grew increasingly agitated, prompting the police to take action to disperse the crowd. In an attempt to control the angry mob, the police first fired shots in the air and then resorted to lathicharge. However, the measures seemed to have the opposite effect, as the protesters became even more incensed.
During the police firing, three individuals were hit by bullets. Tragically, two of them succumbed to their injuries, while one person’s death has been officially confirmed by the Barsoi subdivision Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).
The deceased has been identified as 35-year-old Mohammad Khurshid, a resident of Basal village, Chhachna. Meanwhile, among the injured is Niyaz from Chhogra, Champa Khor Panchayat, who has been referred to Siliguri, West Bengal, for further medical treatment.
Adding to the complexity of the situation, the police have accused the public of pelting stones at them during the protest, leading to heightened tensions in the entire area. In response to the gravity of the incident, senior officials have rushed to the spot to assess the situation and maintain peace in the region.
