KANPUR: Five policemen have been booked for murder in connection with a death in police custody in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur Dehat. In this case, 11 policemen have also been suspended.
The deceased has been identified as Balwant Singh (27), of Saraiya Lalpur village. Singh’s family has accused the police of torturing him, which led to his death. The deceased family have filed a murder case against the policemen posted at Rania police station in Kanpur Dehat. Along with this, the family members have also expressed doubt on the role of the doctor who treated the youth in Akbarpur district hospital. The doctor has also been named in the FIR.
Superintendent of Police, Kanpur Dehat, Suniti said that 11 police personnel, including SOG in-charge Prashant Gautam, Shivali police station president Rajesh Kumar Singh, Rania police station in-charge Shiv Prakash Singh, Maitha outpost in-charge Gyan Prakash Pandey, have been suspended in Rania police station itself. An inquiry has been set up.

He said, “Three boys were arrested by the joint team of Thana Shivli and SOG. Some more names came out from their statements, out of which one person was called Balwant Singh. He started complaining of chest pain. Immediately he was Took him to the hospital for treatment. Where he was treated but he died during treatment.
At the same time, the family members of the deceased Balwant have released photographs and videos of the body of the deceased youth to prove their allegations, which point towards the youth being brutally beaten. The body of the young man was completely blue below the knees and near the waist, and the skin of his knees was also exposed.
Sachin, the brother of the deceased, says, “The SP categorically denied that there was any assault on him. The SP said that he died of a heart attack. So we said that if it is so, then show the dead body, then give us the body.” When we forcefully took out the body, the marks of injuries were clearly visible in it.”
“The inquiry into the matter is going on and further action would be initiated in accordance with the findings,” the SP said.
