NEW DELHI: In a landmark decision during the first Union Cabinet meeting of 2025, the government approved significant measures aimed at supporting farmers. The budget for the ‘Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana’ was raised to ₹69,515 crore to strengthen crop insurance. Additionally, an ₹800 crore fund will drive technological advancements in assessing crop damage and speeding up claim settlements.
The cabinet also announced the full digitization of the crop insurance process, ensuring transparency and efficiency. In another farmer-centric move, a special one-time subsidy will reduce the cost of a 50 kg DAP fertilizer bag to ₹1,350, with the government absorbing the financial burden. This ₹3,850 crore package aims to shield farmers from global crises like war-induced inflation.
