Amazon plans to lay off thousands of employees: Report

WASHINGTON: An American newspaper has claimed that Amazon is planning to lay off about 10,000 employees in corporate and technology roles beginning this week. If this happens, then this is the biggest layoff in the history of the company.

According to the New York newspaper, the process of sacking can start from this week itself. Amazon Shares closed down about 2% on Monday.

The New York Times, said that these layoffs will be in many of the company’s businesses such as voice assistant Alexa and human resources department.

According to the Reuters, “Amazon is planning to lay off around 10,000 employees in corporate and technology roles beginning this week. According to the New York Times, the cuts would represent about 3% of Amazon’s corporate staff”

Recently, social media platforms Twitter, Meta and Microsoft have also fired a large number of employees and now the name of e-commerce company Amazon has also been added to it.

Amazon reported 798,000 employees at the end of 2019 but had 1.6 million full- and part-time employees as of Dec. 31, 2021, a 102% increase. The New York Times said the total number of layoffs “remains fluid” and could change.

It has been said in the report that a person associated with the company said that the number of layoffs may change after not revealing the identity. Because as each business unit completes its plan, the picture will become more clear. But this number can be around 10 thousand.

Amazon’s layoffs during the crucial holiday season show that the global economy heading towards a crisis has put pressure on the company’s business units that have high expenses and low deliveries.
