After scuffle with Uddhav Thackeray’s MLA from Singer Sonu Nigam, aide say – he could have died’

MUMBAI: Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam was assaulted during a concert on Monday. The son of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) group MLA has been accused of assaulting Sonu Nigam. It is alleged that during a concert in Chembur area, he was manhandled and abused allegedly by Shiv Sena (UBT) members.

A case has been filed for wrongful restraint and voluntarily causing hurt, police said.

However, Suprada Phaterpekar, a member of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women, identified herself as the organiser of the Chembur festival and said her team has apologised to Nigam. In a tweet, she said it was her brother who was trying to take a selfie with the singer. She also appealed to people not to believe those trying to politicise the incident.

“The incident occurred when Sonu Nigam was leaving the stage after his live performance at the Chembur festival. He was stopped from behind by someone. When two people accompanying the singer tried to move him aside, the man pushed them down the steps. This led to one of them sustaining injuries,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Hemraj Singh Rajput.

The man who has been charged in the incident is Swapnil Phaterpekar, the DCP said.

Along with this, Suprada Phaterpekar said that a person fell from the stage during the argument. We took him to the hospital and then Sonu Nigam went to the police. He said that there is nothing to do politics, it was not related to Azaan or loudspeaker issue. My brother will cooperate with the police.
